After pregnancy and weight gain a common effect on the body is extra fat and skin excess on the abdomen. In some cases, lliposuction is a good option. In many cases liposuction must be combined with an abdominoplasty to achieve a satisfactory result. Sometimes there is a lot of excess skin on the back that a so-called circular pleural abdominoplasty must be done to achieve an acceptable result. Pregnancy often causes the abdominal muscles to slip apart, resulting in a permanent widening of the mid-section after pregnancy. Sometimes this causes the stomach to bulge outwards.

It is important that the patient does not suffer from any significant overweight, the patient should have a normal weight. The surgery itself is carried out under anesthesia and takes about four hours. A сircumferential abdominoplasty takes approximately six hours. The skin and subcutaneous fat are loosened from the abdominal muscles and if the muscles have slipped apart, they are sewn together as an inner corset.
For some patients, their problem basically only consists of excess skin in the lower abdomen, therefore they will be able to achieve a good result with only a lower abdominoplasty without a navel transfer. Liposuction is often done in conjunction with the abdominoplasty to trim the waist, hips and stomach.
Often, the patient is required to stay at the clinic for one to two nights. Girdles should be worn during the day and night for three weeks, and after that daily for another three weeks. It is common that the abdomen feels a little swollen and tender in the first months after surgery. During the first two weeks, the patient is recommended to move around at home, but to avoid longer walks and strenuous physical movement. After eight weeks, the patient can return to lighter exercise, such as running.
Possible complications include delayed healing of wounds, bleeding, infections, and impaired sensation. However, the sense of touch usually returns after 6-12 months.
