During the consultation with a doctor, it is determined what type of surgery that should be performed. It is common that the patient's request can be met by other treatments. For example, laxity of the eyelids may be due to that the eyebrows have dropped down, and if that is the case a brow lift might be recommended. Most people who choose to perform an eyelid surgery have hanging eyelids due to age, but hanging eyelids can also be caused by hereditary factors and may even affect younger people. It is important that the patient and the surgeon jointly identify what intervention that best suits the patient and how the procedure should be performed.
Upper eyelid lift
An upper eyelid lift is a relatively simple procedure with a low risk for complications. The procedure can be performed with local anesthetics combined with sedative drugs, but some patients prefer to be under anesthesia. The surgery usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour and the patient can leave the clinic the same day. When the anesthesia releases, it is common that the patient experiences pain in and around the eyes, but this decreases within an hour. The most common remaining complaints are lighter swelling and bruising, but these disappear gradually within the next 3-4 weeks. Most people can return to work after 1-2 weeks.
Lower eyelid plastic
Some experience that they look tired when the lower eyelids have slumped down or have become folded. There are many different reasons why these folds or bags are formed. Sometimes this is because the skin under the eyes has become inelastic over the years, and in other cases it may be caused by so-called "low bags" beneath the skin.
Depending on the location of the fat deposits, and how the area around the eyes looks, the surgery may be more or less extensive. In some cases, there is a need to transplant fat to achieve the best results, and in other cases the cuts are placed under the lower eyelashes to remove excess fat.
A lower eyelid lift is performed under anesthesia and the procedure takes about one to one and a half hours. Infections are rare, but the area surrounding the eyes may be swollen and blue. Most patients can return to work after about 1-2 weeks.
